Rainier Valley Eats

DianaVinh_016The Rainier Valley Eats! Coalition (RaVE) believes that healthy food is a basic human right. We recognize that the ability to access healthy food is related to multiple issues and not just a result of low income.  We are taking a holistic approach to achieve real change in our community’s access to healthy food. We are promoting the grow, share, eat model primarily in Rainier Beach around the Henderson corridor.

Lead Organizations with Rainier Valley Eats!
United Way of King County addresses the issue of hunger in our community through a lead role in RaVE.
Seattle Tilth coordinates various gardening opportunities around Southeast Seattle as a part of RaVE’s focus on growing.
Community Kitchens NW brings people together in a common kitchen to prepare large amounts of food to share.
Public Health Seattle & King County works with the Rainier Valley Eats! Coalition to promote access to healthier foods and improve the well-being of Southeast Seattle residents.  Public Health coordinates the activities of community partners and evaluates RaVE’s programs.

KatieBefore working at Seattle Tilth, Katie Pencke grew up in Southeast Seattle, studied ecology at the University of Arizona in Tucson, and Horticulture at South Seattle Community College. Working as a bi-lingual healthcare educator for Seattle Parks and as an environmental educator with Passages Northwest, Girls on the Sound, and Tucson’s Bicycle Inter-Community Art and Salvage, prepared her to begin her Seattle Tilth career as a learning garden coordinator in 2008. Since that time she helped start Seattle Tilth Farm Works in Auburn, and is now program manager of Southeast Seattle programs at the Rainier Beach Urban Farm and Wetlands.

She and her husband Dan rode their bikes across the U.S. and from Paris to Budapest in 2004, before settling down back in South Seattle, where Dan now owns and operates Boxer Bicycles LLC, and they enjoy spending time with their son Ramone.
